The plastic artist EUGENIO TÉLLEZ was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1939.

He was brought up in Lima, Peru and in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Between 1957 and 1959 he studied at the School of Fine Arts at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. Between 1960 and 1966 he worked with Stanley William Hayter in Atelier 17 in Paris, collaborating on the preparation and creation of series of engravings with Alechinsky, Marcel Duchamp, Jacques Herold and Gino Severini. During that time he also travelled extensively in Germany (he lived in Munich for a short while), Holland, England, Spain and Belgium.

Between 1962 and 1966 he was Associate Director of Atelier 17. From 1966 to 1968 he was visiting professor in the Faculty of Painting at the University of Illinois. In 1969 he was nominated Director of the Ben Shahn Graphic Workshop in the Skowhegan Art School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine.

In 1971 he participated in the jury of the 9th Festival of Experimental Cinema in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was also a jury member on the International Exhibition of the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts in Montreal. Between 1970 and 1994 he was professor of Fine Arts at the University of York, Toronto. In 1987 he was member of the jury on the La Joven Estampa in the Casa de Las Americas in Havana, Cuba.

He is Professor Emeritus of the University of York, Toronto.

VISUAL STRATEGY

The artist communicates his world vision using pictorial strategies and plastic experiments. Using multiple conceptual procedures his work considers questions of cultural identity, the Latin American experience and the complexity of humankind. One of many themes in his work is the discovery and conquest of America. He explores geographically diverse areas, investigating their identity from their geology to their cultures and their mythical figures (for example Nosferatu in ex-Czechoslovakia).

In his series Battles the theme is  mankind's evolution and the processes of colonization. He creates a radiographic expression of this, associating maps with anatomical descriptions of the human body. His works form disparate time and space zones in which atavistic sacrifices and naked warriors coexist with transcontinental missiles and supersonic airplanes, with mockingly childish doodles, comic book sketches or quotations from art history and invented maps. This creates an aesthetic of fragmentation and discontinuity, of simultaneous spaces and times. He mixes personal experiences with universal history in pictograms which incorporate a particular repertory of identifiable icons. The worlds he creates break up, they are battlefields full of explosions which echo civil, regional and world conflicts.

The artist works on several paintings at the same time. Among his techniques is the use of water-based pigments which he mixes with oils, creating a collage effect. He stains the canvas and then adds various layers of oil painting which he can then etch with simple-line sketches to bring out the underlying colours.

As a result of his experience at the universities in the US and Canada he also worked in video and art action.
